Randy, Tom. John and Bruce today.

Getting back in touch with long lost friends can sometimes be difficult.  How many times have you thought of someone from your past and wondered what happened to them?   Since I’ve signed up on facebook.com, old friends have popped up all over the universe.  Not only have we found almost fifty members from our class, but also another dozen or so from other classes including one faculty member.

When I was fifteen I formed my first band.  My parents had bought me a new cherry apple red double cutaway Gibson electric guitar for Christmas.   My cousin John Woelfle (Garfield class of '65') played drums in the McLean Junior High band and decided to invest the money he had earned on his paper route to buy a set of drums… cherry apple red by the way.  The third member of the group was a 1966 Garfield grad, Bruce Frey.  Bruce played lead guitar and also had a cherry apple red Gibson just like mine… moreover, he was an excellent guitarist.  We then needed a bottom sound, so Tom Gillis filled the bill with his bass fiddle.  Prior to the British invasion, a standup bass was common place in bands, but by the mid 1960s, the fad was becoming bass guitars.   Tom’s bass wasn’t cherry apple red, but he got the job done with his maplewood standup.  Whenever we did a rock number or a Beatle’s song, Tom turned the fiddle sideways and played it on his leg.  Oh yes, we were cool!

Jane Buchholz Gallagher shares with us, stories about growing up in Terre Haute and just being a Hoosier.  She and her husband, Larry Gallagher, also class of ‘67’ now live in Crawfordsville, IN.  Larry came to Garfield from Otter Creek and Jane went to McLean.  They dated through graduation and were married in 1968.  They have one son, Kevin who is married and lives near them.
Larry and Jane are both semi-retired, but are still working part time.

Young Drivers

My son has always had a fascination with cars.  Larry thought it was because he was born on Memorial Day the year Mario Andretti won the Indy 500, which prompted his great-granddad to nickname him Mario. I thought it was because his great-grandma gave him his cousin’s Barbie car to play with on his baby blanket when he was only a few months old.  He’d raise his little head and focus on the bright pink car.  Someone would honk its horn and he’d kick and squeal with delight.  When he was eighteen months old, he had a rabbit that he would ride, wearing a “Bolo Ball” that he’d gotten when we bought his new shoes. He wore it on his head like a helmet whenever he was on that crazy yellow rabbit.  When he was two and a half, his great-grandma gave him his dad’s old pedal car that she had found when she cleaned out the shed. He’d drive around asking his Uncle Kelly who was only a year older than him, “Hey Ki, want to go for a ride in my car?” Ki, I mean Kelly, was always ready to ride.
