Sharon and John Vesotko with their sister Darcy and Lulu.
We had one set of twins in our class… John and Sharon Verostko. But it was little Lulu that caused the family so much worry in the summer of 2009. John and Sharon’s younger sister Darcy was on her way to visit Sharon in Borden, Indiana. As she came down the road and turned into Sharon’s driveway, little Lulu ran in front of her car and was run over. Darcy, of course was devastated… as was Sharon. They rushed the dog to the veterinarian and it wasn’t good news. Lulu spent several days in the hospital and it was touch and go. Sharon spent every day praying for Lulu and her sister Marcy, who felt so bad about what had happened. But the prayers were answered and Lulu came home for Sharon to nurse her back to health. By Christmas she did what we all do to our pets.... She dressed her in a Santa Claus outfit. (picture above) Good News… Bad News…
Tom and Janet Runner Schleier Janet Runner Schleier and her husband Tom have good news and bad news. After living in Phoenix, Arizona for over 30 years, they moved to Los Angeles five years ago. That was good news, we got to see each other quite often over the years. Tom worked in Long Beach for Boeing Airlines as an aircraft engineer. Because of the economy and lack of contracts, he was laid off early in December for at least six months… that was bad news. But the good news is that he has accepted an offer and will begin his new job February first… the bad news is that they will have to move across country to Connecticut. It’s not easy to pull up stakes and move to another new city, especially at our age. Tom and Janet feel very blessed that this opportunity has presented itself. The good news, is their son Dusty and his wife Amy lived in the same town just seven miles from Tom’s new job. The bad news is Dusty and Amy moved to Nashville, Tennessee to take a new job. The good news is Dusty decided to keep their house and rent it out… the bad news is that they just signed a year lease with their new tenants before Tom took the job in Connecticut. The good news is we got together with them one last time before they left California. The bad news is, I hate to see them go. February 1, 2010: Tom and Janet are now in their new home.
Freddie Schleier 1995-2009 Tom and Janet lost their beloved Freddie December 28th. He was such a wonderful little angel of love. They will miss him dearly.

When we were kids growing up in the fifties the TV tube was filled with westerns like Have Gun We’ll Travel, The Rifleman, Wyatt Earp, Wanted: Dead or Alive and on and on. There wasn’t a night that went by without cowboys shooting it out somewhere on television. But viewers began losing interest with them in the mid sixties, until the only remaining shows were Bonanza and Gunsmoke. The westerns on television ended in 1975 when Marshall Dillon, Festus, Miss Kitty and Doc took the show to cowboy heaven. Although there have been motion pictures based on stories of the old West, the days of Hopalong Cassidy, Gene Autry and John Wayne are gone forever. But it was Roy Rogers, the "King of the Cowboys" that I remember best.

Several years ago I signed on to MySpace.com. I had heard of this popular web site and joined with hopes of getting in touch with long lost friends. The first day I filled out the profile information, added a photo of myself and looked at my home page… I couldn’t believe I already had my first friend. His name was Tom and I had no idea who he was. I soon found out Tom was everyone’s friend, he comes with the territory. My daughter Jamie felt sorry for me and became my first official friend. She was quick... however to point out the fact that I was listed as a SINGLE male. I guess I didn't fill out the entire profile. I realize now that two hundred ninety nine million of the the three hundred million members are teenagers. After three years I still have the same two friends… I’ve come to the conclusion that My Space isn’t for people over 30... let alone 60. Being a glutton for punishment I heard about facebook.com three months ago. Again I entered all the information into my profile and to my amazement I began to hear from friends all over the country. Among my group are over 35 former Garfield classmates and a teacher. The site provides messages from everyone in your group as well as picture galleries to keep up with ever growing families and friends. Sign up, it's free and it's easy... just click here: http://www.facebook.com 8 new faces on facebook

What this town needs is a great fish sandwich. Oh, one can find good fish sandwiches, but they’re not like the cod fish sandwiches we get at The Bramble Bush in Terre Haute. We’ve tried about every fish sandwich there is in Montgomery County. Some come close, but just don’t make the final cut. To read this story, click Read more>>> |
